I am a terrible cynic when it comes to the "real" world, and that is probably why I choose to focus my work on fantasy. But somehow, for me, fantasy can be far more authentic than what has been created by the political, corporate, and "mainstream" religious organizations of the world, much of which appears to have produced deceptive nightmares throughout most of history.
I find solace and comfort in Nature and the spirits of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. Basically, I feel that every person has the right to find their own system of belief; that whatever religion or philosophy of faith helps one to live their life with a sense of hope and positive purpose, and gives them comfort in their fear of death... that is the right "true" spiritual path for them. But if that "faith" causes them to discriminate against others, claim superiority over others, or force others to accept the same creed and religion, it is not a true spiritual faith, but a form of tyranny.
In the end, I am compelled to believe that there must be a great overarching spiritual "consciousness" that encompasses all the different forms of deity ever imagined.... for the god depicted in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic bibles, torahs, and holy books is just much too narrow-minded and small. The ideas of a single religious "truth" or a special "chosen" group of people are simply offensive and insulting to the majority of Earth's inhabitants.Of course, most of us remain "seekers" of the "true" path throughout our lives on earth. Ultimately,perhaps, that is one of the main "purposes" of this life after all.
Moreover, I quite sincerely believe that we return... that our spirit-soul-essence somehow needs to keep coming back to perfect and learn lessons...lessons about how to live in peace and love on the planet with all its myriad creation. This only makes sense to me, since everything else is recycled after death and returns to earth replenished....returning its energy revitalized, refreshed, re-formed. All of Nature (including rocks, air, and water) contributes its energy to everything else.... so why not we humans? Ghosts? maybe, but I've never met one in person yet. Spirits? yes... everywhere, as long as we keep our senses alert and are willing to "see" with our hearts.
My mother was genuinely devout, holding her faith in a lovely compassionate way that allowed for many different ways of believing and knowing god. She taught me that no individual.... no matter how "high" in the hierarchy of a church or government... has the right to claim that theirs is the absolute truth and only way to believe. And, after I studied history more deeply and began reading the alternative histories of religion from women's perspective, I learned how patriarchal institutions have made such a terrible mess of humanity's potential for good through their incessant greed and warmongering; and most of all, through their repression of women and denigration of female power.
At that point I began to pray to the female face of god...the Mother God.... she has a million names, and answers to all of them and is not "jealous".... rather she is honest... and although she can be very frightening at times; can seem indifferent to humanity's problems, she can also be a source of great comfort, for she is always present in our lives... imminent and vital in nature and all earthly beings. For me, the female face of god remains forgiving of human frailties and honors the sensual, creative, natural spirit in all of life.
